This bright overture opens with brassy syncopated chords that foreshadow rhythmically interesting themes. An alto saxophone solo presents the folk-like melody of the slow middle section. A variety of colorful instrumental combinations further develop this theme. The dynamic Allegro section is partially restated before the dramatic conclusion. (Grade 4)
