Composed for the Swedish virtuoso Kim Hellgren, Clint Needham’s 9-minute Viola Music is a dramatically-paced powerhouse in three movements. The opening Perpetual Motion and Cadenza is a dazzling ride, full of idiomatically-voiced double stops culminating in a free recitative. The following Song is beautifully plaintive, with a frisky episode in the middle, and the final Scherzo is a frenetic dance developed from where the opening movement left off, and wildly driving to a fiery coda.
